چکیده

We demonstrate the utility of optically polarized Xe NMR in a convection cell for measuring the surface properties of materials. In particular, we show adsorption of xenon gas on oxidatively purified singleand multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The interaction between xenon and multiwalled nanotubes produced by chemical vapor deposition was stronger than that of singleor multiwalled nanotubes produced by carbon arc discharge. Xenon was observed in gas, liquid, and adsorbed phases. The large polarization and moderate pressures of xenon 0.2 MPa allowed resolution of multiple lines in both the gas and condensed phases of xenon in contact with carbon nanotubes. Xe gas exchanges with physisorbed xenon in two different environments. Xe adsorbs preferentially on defects, but if the number of defects is not sufficient, it will also adsorb on surface and interstitial sites. Penetration of Xe in the tube interior was not observed.

Theoretical Investigation of the Effect of (8,0) Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes on Acidity of Aliphatic Alcohols

ONIOM calculation is carried out to estimate the acidity of five aliphatic alcohols before and after adsorbing on the tip of (8,0) single-walled carbon nanotube. The ONIOM method is performed using a combination of density functional theory and AM1 semiemperical method for alcohols and their corresponding conjugated bases. Deprotonation Gibbs free energies of alcohols are calculated and compare...

Cross-polarized excitons in carbon nanotubes.

Polarization of low-lying excitonic bands in finite-size semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is studied by using quantum-chemical methodologies. Our calculations elucidate properties of cross-polarized excitons, which lead to the transverse optical absorption of nanotubes and presumably couple to intermediate-frequency modes recently observed in resonance Raman excitation spec...

A computational investigation on NMR Characterization and electronic properties of some zigzag nanotubes

DFT calculations were applied to evaluate the electronic and magnetic properties of zigzag BC2Nnanotubes based on the 13C, 15N, and 11B NMR parameters and natural charge analysis. Weconsidered three types of zigzag nanotubes, ZZ-1, ZZ-2, and ZZ-3 (n, 0) with n = 8, 12, and 14. Theobtained results indicated the divisions of the electrostatic environments around C nuclei into a fewlayers, consist...

Observation of the triplet exciton in EuS-coated single-walled nanotubes.

Photon absorption by carbon nanotubes creates bound electron-hole pairs called excitons, which can exist in spin-polarized triplet or spin-unpolarized singlet configurations. Triplet excitons are optically inactive owing to the weak spin-orbit coupling in nanotubes. This prevents the optical injection of electron spin into nanotubes for spintronic applications and limits the efficiency of photo...

Physical adsorption of xenon in open single walled carbon nanotubes: Observation of a quasi-one-dimensional confined Xe phase

The adsorption of Xe into carbon single walled nanotubes with both closed and open ends has been investigated using temperature programmed desorption and other surface analytical tools. It has been found that opening the ends of the nanotube by chemical cutting increases both the kinetic rate and the saturation capacity of the nanotubes for Xe at 95 K. Further enhancement in Xe adsorption kinet...
